In 2014, I started collecting examples of first run user experiences with the goal of inspiring better design of one of the most critical moments in a new user’s experience. This site is an archive of the various product first run breakdowns I’ve done, and I add to it as my schedule allows.
It’s very important to recognize that the first run experience is just a smaller part of a broader user onboarding journey, and the whole experience has to be designed thoughtfully. We don’t want to only focus on the first time use. We want to leverage guided interaction instead of front-loaded instruction, and that means onboarding people at their own pace.
