Wake alarm

The good bits:

  • Wake requires no sign-up.
  • Wake uses a playthrough tutorial to introduce the new user to the app’s primary interactions. It focuses on just the core spaces of the experience: creating an alarm, dismissing it, where to change settings and how to dim the screen. The playthrough is comprised of tight visual and aural feedback loops. It is also optional, and the new user can exit at any time.
  • The new user alternatively has the option of watching a video instead of participating in the tutorial, which is helpful for users with different styles of learning.
  • After completing the tutorial, the new user is given a clear next step: “Spin the dial to create your first alarm” is presented as an inline cue on the home screen. It disappears after the first alarm is successfully created.

To be improved:

  • Although the playthrough uses interaction to introduce itself to a new, the alarm created during the tutorial is thrown away upon completion. It would be more relevant to the new user if she could save the alarm created during the playthrough as her own. This would be similar to how video game playthroughs provide a safe place for a new player to earn early XP or coins.
