Fancy

Fancy for iOS first time user experience

The good bits:

  • Fancy has made some improvements from the first versions of its app. It used to require users to sign up upon first launch before they could see any products. Now, the app allows the new user a little bit of a free sample, allowing her to search and browse products without an account.
  • Fancy uses clear UI images and animations in its intro tour, which gives the new user a clearer understanding of the features of the app.

To be improved:

  • There is no way to skip the intro tour. If this were a user who had already used the product on another platform, she would have to go through all screens and animations, which may be communicating things she already knows.
  • There is no way to go backward in the intro tour.
  • Fancy forces a user to sign up before she can add items to her cart. Even if an account might be necessary for purchase, adding to a cart is commonly used by customers to save things for later and it is not recommended to place it behind a sign-up wall. The user may further be confused because she can view the empty state of the “Cart” tab without being signed in, despite other tabs prompting for sign-up immediately upon tapping. Being able to see the empty state of the Cart tab may cause the new user to assume she can also add items to her cart without an account. Overall, this cart restriction conflicts with the expectations set by the intro tour, which states that a user can “instantly purchase goods.”
