Pebble app for Android first time user experience
The good bits:
- There are less steps overall, likely due to the fact that Android allows the app to have access to settings controls and configurations. For example, I don’t have to page through multiple instructions to learn how to enable various settings panel; instead, I simply need to turn on accessibility, and the “magic box” takes care of the rest.
- Like the pre-2.0 version of the iPhone app, the Android experience does not require me to log in with an account. I have an option of learning more or simply getting started with setup.
- Like the iOS version, using the passkey as a shared element between the companion phone and the watch helps cement to the user that they are in the right place in their setup process.
- The language during error cases is noticeably different than what I encountered on the iPhone app (“Hmpf, no Pebbles found”, as well as clear “Search Again” instructions). This treatment can be incredibly important because, as you can see, my connection between my phone and watch fell off even after I’d successfully enabled accessibility. Use the companion device as much as possible to keep the user informed while they set up their wearable device.
To be improved:
- A disconcerting element is the vast difference in content during the setup process on Android vs. iPhone. Remember that users may very well be using more than one device in conjunction with their wearable, and so the expectations set on one phone could impact the expectations of another.
