Target app – 2013 version

The screens above show the first time user experience for the Target shopping app on iPhone.

The good bits:
Target allows people to shop without an account, but also prompts users to set the location of the store they most commonly visit. This prompt appears as a modal overlay so that the user can skip at any time. Once they choose a store, they are offered a chance to sign in or create an account. This can be skipped, but it is helpful in that it clearly illustrates why an account would be useful.

Once in the app, users may notice that Target has a beta version of their new shopping list. This has its own mini first time user experience. The list shows a series of editable sample list items that clearly state the different ways they can be interacted with.

To be improved:
The text associated with the notifications and location prompt could be customized to better explain how Target would use those features.

The additional step after completing the store setup to “Start shopping” seems unnecessary, as at this point you could just drop someone immediately into the app to start shopping.
