Sunrise

The above screens show my first time user experience with Sunrise, the calendar integration app for iOS.

The good bits:

  • Users may skip the intro tour by tapping the clear call to action, “New to Sunrise”
  • The app doesn’t try to re-explain the mobile calendar concept; once the setup process is complete, the user is taken immediately to their calendars without needing to go through popovers or coachmarks. By leveraging a user’s existing experience with calendars on iOS, Sunrise can avoid extraneous tutorials.

To be improved:

  • The intro tour has only one slide (slide #3) that provides an objective value-add of the product. The rest are subjective and more marketing-centric, adding little value to going through this flow.
  • The app forces a user to create an account up front, with a fairly extensive EULA, instead of allowing them to create a locally-stored calendar as an exploratory first step.
  • Asking for access to Google or Facebook calendars without seeing the benefit is a large hurdle to put in front of new users.
  • The requirement to sign up and corresponding 4-step setup process feels out of balance with the experience after a user is given access to their calendar, where no follow-up help or guidance is provided. A user may ask, was that worth it?
