Tep

Tep for iOS first time user experience

The good bits:

  • Tep skips an intro tour in favor of getting the new users straight to her animal
  • The location permission appears after explicitly selecting an exercise, and provides justification about why it is needed.
  • After reaching the home screen, the center button pulses as a hint as to the user’s next step (exercise tracking).

To be improved:

  • Tep requires users to create an account before they can interact with Tep. The reason for requiring an account is never made clear. Tep should consider having a limited functionality pet available for a new user to play with, as it would help to solidify the value proposition and build an emotional connection with the pet.
  • There is no personal focus in the onboarding experience. For example, a pet name is automatically assigned instead of the user being asked to name it (the new user is told to change it in options). This lack of onboarding customization or personalization reduces the new user’s potential emotional connection with her pet.
  • Overall there is a lack of clear next steps to help the user take care of her pet. The center button pulses as a small hint, but only takes the user to a secondary screen with text about adventures and a play button. The play button begins a timer for an exercise (running, walking or biking). However, it’s never made clear why this needs to be done. Is the only way to “feed” my pet to explicitly log an exercise through this app? Is Tep logging my ambient activity? How often do I need to “feed” my pet? What incentive do I have to keep it alive? These questions could be best addressed through gradual engagement hooks or messages sent by the app to remind a new user to interact with the Tep pet on a daily basis.
