Brightnest

BrightNest first time user experience

The good bits:

  • BrightNest uses a simple, visual wizard to get information from the user about his house and living situation. The user is not prompted to sign in until after this information is gathered.
  • The app uses inline cues on the homescreen to progressively ask more questions and seed additional tips.

To be improved:

  • Although it is mildly deferred to the end of the wizard, the app still forces a user to sign in before he can view or try any content.
  • The wizard is lacking an indicator of the user’s progress or how far he is from completion.
  • It is not clear how the answers made in the wizard will affect the experience, or even what kind of content a user can expect when finished. In fact, the concept of to-do’s is not even introduced until a user signs in and gets to the “Welcome!” popover on the home screen.  I would suggest allowing a user to browse some of the content before starting with the wizard or signing in (the “Explore” section of the app already has a lot of this content). Also, it might be helpful for a user to see the home screen labelled “To-do’s” instead of “Suggestions” to provide continuity.
