Umano app

These screens show the first time user experience of the Umano news articles app for iOS.

The good bits:

  • Umano allows users to skip logging in, so that they can try out the article listening features before signing up.

To be improved:

  • In general, the value proposition of the app is not readily apparent until secondary screens are triggered. For example, on the initial screen the user is asked to “Login” or “Skip”, but has to read the alert dialog that appears after tapping “Skip” to understand why an account would be desirable in the first place. Perhaps this information could have been included on the main screen.
  • Additionally, the “Are you sure?” alert is a high point of friction for new users. Asking for double confirmation on a non-destructive action simply imposes an additional wall and sets the tone that the app creators really didn’t want to offer the “Skip” option in the first place.
  • The 3-panel setup slideshow seems much longer than it needs to be. The first panel presents only general information that doesn’t progress the user. Instead, the real benefit is on the “Choose Categories” screen. I could imagine this being the only screen in the set, with the “Done” button at the bottom replaced with “Start Listening” after one or more categories had been selected.
